Central to our both our ancient and modern Taino cultures is being eco-conscious
We had to adapt from continental people to island people as we migrated from South America to the Antilles. Continental people can easily hunt and drive island animal ecosystems to extinction. Originally we started hunting iguana on the islands closest to South America, after we brought each island to the brink we would move to another island (further away from the continent). After this cycle repeated itself several times, we adapted to a fishing and cultivation culture. Our societal values restructured and we became island people focused on achieving balance on fragile island.
Beyond the destruction caused by humans in the natural would, the gods commanded the destructive hurricanes and a lot of our religion was on appeasing the gods to avoid the wrath of the hurricanes. Modern science has indicated that the increasing number and severity of hurricanes is related to climate change. We aim to preserve and appreciate the natural world, and climate change means there is imbalance in the Taino spiritual universe. Balance must be achieved so that we can reduce the impact of hurricanes.
