Taino spirituality is centered on being an island culture. For example time begins with the spilling of a gourd which contained water and fish. In Taino spirituality there are real and supernatural geographies including mythical islands east deep into the Atlantic Ocean which harbored the gods. The paleo-taino belief systems was designed to bring balance to these supernatural geographies. When things were out of balance, hurricanes and cannibals would find their way to the Taino homeland. Part of the story of our survival includes the transition from being an ancient, paleo culture to becoming a modernized culture. Many of the surviving Taino no longer believe in the ancient stories. It is possible to believe simultaneously in two or more spiritual frameworks, and we note that our goal is not to disregard our complicated past. However the Taino religion served us well for thousands of years -- it spoke to our hearts directly in ways that were relevant to our vantage point as island people.
Most who are interested in reengaging in the Taino Society today will be Christian, Jewish, Rastafarian and Muslim. Others will New Age, Agnostic and Atheist. Some will believe entirely in Indigenous religions. Regardless, our souls are nourished by understanding and bringing to life ancient traditions. The balance in spirituality we find is a personal thing. As in most things, we all can improve by becoming more balanced.
